Here is a sample of the produce we will be growing for the 2017 season.
Various greens include: Romaine/Leaf/Butterhead Lettuce, Arugula, Spinach, Kale and Swiss Chard.
Micro greens are baby greens harvested at the first true leaf stage. They are tender, flavourful and nutrient dense. We will be adding them to your box periodically throughout the growing season. We will be growing Broccoli, Radish and pea micro greens.
You will start to see root crops entering your box in mid July (with the exception of Radishes which are earlier). Roots/tubers include: Carrots, Beets, Potatoes and Radishes.
Brassicas (Cabbage Family)
We will be growing Cabbage, Broccoli and Cauliflower this year. Look for these items in your box starting at the beginning of August.
Warm Season Vegetables
These vegetables are actually fruit (from a botanical standpoint). They will be found in your box starting mid to late August (cucumbers in mid July). Includes: Heirloom and Cherry Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Sweet Peppers and Hot Peppers.
We will be growing both Sugar Snap Peas and Green/Yellow/Purple Filet Beans. Look for these vegetables in your box starting mid July.
Celery prefers lots of moisture, cooler temperatures and a long growing season. Celery will be added to your box near the end of August.
Alliums (Onion Family)
Members of the onion family are known for adding lots of flavour to your plate. We are growing several vegetables that are in this family, including: Yellow Onions, Garlic/Garlic Scapes, Green Onions/Scallions and Leeks.
We will be growing both Summer Squash (Zucchini) and a couple of different types of Winter Squash (Butternut and Spaghetti). Zucchini will start showing up in your box at the beginning of August, while the Winter Squash will be included at the beginning of October.
Herbs can add unique and delicious flavours to every meal. Some weeks we will be featuring a herb that is compatible with other vegetables included in your box. These herbs include: Sweet Basil, Cilantro, Dill, Parsley, Mint, Summer Savory, Thyme, Rosemary and Sage.
This year for fruit we will have Apples and Watermelon available. Watermelon matures by the end of August, while Apples will be harvested from mid September to mid October.
We keep bees in our garden to help increase the pollination of our crops. This means that in addition to fruits and vegetables we will also have some honey to share! Later on in the season after our first harvest (mid-August) we will be posting honey for sale, so keep checking our website/newsletter for updates.
Occasionally, the garden is more bountiful than usual. If this occurs and we have extra produce, we will be doing some preserving! You can add these preserves to your weekly basket of produce for an additional fee. The canning will be done following food-safe procedures, using canning-safe recipes.
